Blocking is one of the most powerful ways to stop the opposing team in beach volleyball. A block rejects their attempt to spike, and is seen as a dominant act. Getting a block, and getting the point for the block, however, is important.

    Get Ready to Play

  1. Step 1

Get close to the net, which is the first step to blocking in beach volleyball. While you need to be careful to make sure that you do not touch the net (that is a violation), you need to be close to the net so that you are ready for the block.

  2. Step 2

Move with the hitter. Once you have seen who received the serve, you will know who will be hitting. Keep your eyes on that person. Move with the hitter until they go up for a hit; at this point, you will know where they are, and where they are hitting.

  3. Step 3

Time the appropriate moment to jump in order to hit your highest point as they hit. Make sure you are squared with the net. At the appropriate time, jump up in the air with your arms raised above your head, completely locked straight.

  4. Step 4

Spread your fingers. Make sure that your fingers are spread apart and are reaching over the net. By opening up your hands and reaching over the net, you can make sure that the block does not come back onto your side.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice with a friend (who is imitating hitting) to get your timing down; timing is everything in blocking.
  • Be sure to avoid the net, as hitting the net will cost your team a point.
