Tanning is bad for the skin. From premature aging to skin cancer, tanning in the sun or in a tanning bed is definitely not safe. Luckily, there are many brands of self tanners that are not only affordable, but easy to use. With a few simple steps, a nice healthy tan can be easily achieved.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Self tanning lotion
  • Your favorite scented lotion
  • Loofah
  • Exfoliating body scrub
  1. Step 1

Choose a self tanner that most closely resembles your skin tone as it is. In other words, if you are fair, choose a self tanner for fair skin.

  2. Step 2

Shower and wash using the loofah and exfoliating body scrub. This removes any dead skin from the body, helping to prep it for the self tanner.

  3. Step 3

Now use a half and half method with the lotion and the self tanner. For every squirt (about dime sized) of self tanner you place in your hand, place the same amount of lotion. Mix them in your hand.

  4. Step 4

Place a thin, even coat of the self tanner and the lotion all over your body.

Tips & Warnings
  • By using half self tanner and half lotion, your tan will develop more gently. You won't have the harsh orangeness that sometimes happens with self tanning lotions alone.
  • Choose a brand of self tanning lotion that is hypo-alergenic.
  • There are many kinds of body scrubs out there, and any will do. All you really need to choose is which scent you prefer.
  • As your tan develops, you can move to a shade darker of self tanner.
  • Most self tanning lotions do not contain sunblock, so they will not protect you from UV rays. Remember, self tanners are cosmetic only, so you may wish to apply sunblock also.
  • You may see some "spots" you've missed in your application as your tan develops. Usually, cutting the self tanner with regular lotion helps prevent this, but if it still occurs, simply apply another layer.
  • Be sure to apply an extra thin layer of self tanner and lotion around your elbows and knees.
  • Wash your hands immediately after applying the self tanner and lotion.
  • Wait until the self tanner and lotion have dried before you put clothes on.
