Things You'll Need:

    How to Bleach a Shirt

  1. Step 1

Separate clothes that need bleaching from clothes from those that don't. All plain whites should be bleached. Whites with graphics that are ironed or pressed on may also be bleached. Be very wary when bleaching whites with colored stripes or graphics, as bleach cannot discriminate between colors. When unsure, use a color safe bleach.

  2. Step 2

Begin filling your washing machine with water.

  3. Step 3

Add bleach as marked on the package label. If you're using generic bleach with no label, the general rule of thumb is one-half cup per medium load. Double or half as needed for load size.

  4. Step 4

Allow bleach to dilute as water fills in washer.

  5. Step 5

Add detergent as needed, if you are not using a detergent with bleach.

  6. Step 6

When water has finished filling, add clothing.

  7. Step 7

Allow wash cycle to proceed as normal. When finished, hang to dry or dry in dryer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bleach can also be used for spot treatment. If you need to spot treat, mix one gallon of water per two tablespoons of bleach and pour directly on stain.
  • Undiluted or unproperly diluted bleach can eat through fabric. Never pour pure bleach on stains.
  • Shirt fabric is often thin and bleach is very strong and caustic. Only bleach as needed.
