How to Enter a Kayak From a Dock

  1. Step 1

The very first step when getting into any boat is to put on your personal floatation device. This will keep you safe in the event that you end up in the water.

  2. Step 2

Line the kayak up against the dock.

  3. Step 3

Place the paddle so that one end is on the dock and the other end is on the top of the kayak, just behind the cockpit hole. Because the kayak and the dock are next to each other, the paddle will lie across both the kayak and the dock.

  4. Step 4

Sit on the dock with the paddle behind you. Place one hand on the end of the paddle on the dock, and the other hand on the paddle behind the cockpit. You will use the paddle to steady yourself and the boat as you get in. To do this, push down on the paddle, lifting your body off the dock, and move your body over until you are situated in the kayak. Your feet will most likely be out of the boat at this point, so manuever yourself so that you can get your them in.

  5. Step 5

Pick up the paddle, push off from the dock, and away you go!
