How to Find the Best Cheesesteaks in Philly
-
1
Start out at Pat's and Geno's in South Philly. They are probably ranked as the most popular cheesesteak joints in town. There's a heavy local competition over which is better, so check them both out and make your own decision. You'll find them on opposing corners of 9th and Passayunk.
-
2
Next, order up at Jim's Steaks on South Street. A post-bar-crawl favorite, Jim's Steaks has a devoted following and gigantic sandwiches. If you're just checking out Philly hot-spots, at least stop in for a soda to see their walls full of "Phil-ebrity" customers. Find Jim's at 4th and South.

If you're venturing into the northeast, you'll want to eat at Steve's Prince of Steaks. Outside of central Philly, they've earned an honorable reputation as one of the top cheesesteak stops. Find them at 7200 Bustleton--a quick detour if you're spending your night at Chickie and Pete's.

Hit Tony Luke's! If you're out after a sports game, chances are you'll hear the rowdy crowd chanting about how they are jonesing for Tony Luke's. Located at 39th East Oregon, this hot spot is just a short walk (or crawl) from the complexes. For you non-cheesesteak lovers, they have great sandwiches and fries, too.
-
5
Next, check out Chink's at 6030 Torresdale. One of the lesser known steak spots, they serve up super-fresh rolls and great steaks. It's a bit of a hike from the center of town, but worth the travel.
-
6
If none of these satisfy you, stop over at Lorenzo's Pizza at 900 Christian Street. "A pizza place?" you ask. Yep! Besides having the best monster slices around, Lorenzo's serves up great steaks.
-
7
Finally, if you're visiting right outside the city, check out any of the spots on the Steak and Hoagie Factory chain. They have multiple locations through Bucks and Montgomery county and serve up fresh Amoroso rolls and quality steaks. For locations, check their Web site (see Resources below).

If you don't like any of the choices above, find your own favorite! There's plenty of holes-in-the-wall that have yet to be discovered. Be a trailblazer and promote your choice as a Philly fave.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure you know the "rules" before ordering. Many Philly locales have specific ways of ordering.
Spice up your order! Order provolone instead of whiz or throw on some peppers.
Your first "Philly Cheesesteak" will be nothing like the "Philly-style" steaks you find in the rest of the country. Keep an open mind!
