1
Decide what you will use the computer for. Think about what software you will be running on it. Some common uses for computers are as follows: gaming, communication, Internet, making phone calls over the Internet, photo/video editing, music, email, work, instant messaging, card making, word processing, home office functions, keeping track of finances, making crafts, children's activities, or business.

2
Load the computer up with memory (RAM) and hard drive space. These are needed no matter what. RAM keeps the blank computer screen from appearing when you switch between open windows and will also help it to run faster. HD (Hard Drive space) gives you storage capacity. If you are using it for gaming, load it with a powerful video graphics card as well and speakers with a subwoofer.

Consider purchasing a laptop instead of a desktop if you are tight on space or move around a lot. You can use this anywhere, especially if you have a wireless Internet card installed. You will have less memory overall, but greater portability and features. With a laptop, you will be able to watch and burn DVDs, burn CD or DVDs, give presentations and doing word processing anytime, anywhere. You can install many of the same programs and purchase a portable printer or scanner, if needed.

4
Purchase a desktop if you know you will only use it at home or office, or if kids will be using it. These are more durable and tend to last longer than notebook (laptop) computers.
-
5
Put together a few different scenarios on different computer manufacturer websites. This will give you a better idea of pricing, features and how much computer you will get for your money.
