How to Play Games While Traveling

Traveling with children, especially young children, can prove to be quite a challenge. The never ending, “Are we there yet”, “I need to use the bathroom”, and “I’m bored” can leave you wishing you had stayed home. However, traveling with your family is also a wonderful bonding experience as well. Here are some helpful hints to make traveling with your children really feel like a vacation. Of course there are the conventional methods for entertaining your children on the road, such as “I spy” type road games, portable gaming consoles, and the new portable DVD players, but here’s another less traditional idea. Try turning the whole trip into a game.

Instructions

  1. Turn Traveling into a Game

    • 1

Purchase several prizes. These consist of coloring books, travel-sized board games, playing cards, small toys, and special treats. They can be purchased very inexpensively at your local dollar-type thrift store.

    • 2

Create the “magic glove box” by filling your vehicle’s glove box with the goodies. You could also do this on an airplane by creating the “magic bag”.

    • 3

Explain the game to your children. If they can be a good sport for 100 miles without any unnecessary complaining, then they get a prize from the “magic glove box”. You set the mileage scale based on the length of your trip and the age of your children.

    • 4

Give them a few basic items to entertain themselves at the start of your trip, but then allow them to win the remaining items.

    • 5

Allow ample time to reach your destination so you will be able to stop at that Dinosaur Park or wax museum you saw advertised on the side of the road billboard. This will give everyone a chance to stretch their legs and see some new scenery. If you are flying, promise to make your first activity after settling into your destination kid-friendly. This will help to inspire good behavior.

Tips & Warnings

  • The key is turning the trip itself into part of your fun-filled family vacation.

  • These tips work best with younger children, but the principle works well for anyone.
