Mmmm, marshmallow peeps. They're iconic. They're sweeter than sugar itself. And they're only available during the holidays, so make the most of them while they are around.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Marshmallow peeps
  • Skewers
  • Dipping chocolate
  • Dry breakfast cereal
  • Chocolate bars
  • Graham crackers
  1. Step 1

Hold peeps firmly and dip just their heads or tails into melted dipping chocolate. Let them cool on waxed paper, then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate to make Hybrid Peeps.

  2. Step 2

Submerge entire peeps in dipping chocolate using a wooden skewer, let them drip briefly and cool on waxed paper. Wrap and refrigerate to store.

  3. Step 3

Microwave peeps briefly in a glass bowl until soft. Stir in a small amount of melted butter, add dry breakfast cereal (such as crisp rice cereal) and mix. Press into a well-greased pan to cool and slice into Peep Bars. This works best if you don't overmix the peeps, so they retain some swirls of their original color and sugar coating. It's OK if there are lumps of peep in the mix that aren't melted when you press the mix into the pan. You can also intentionally put whole peeps into the pan to create "Peep Surprises."

  4. Step 4

Soften peeps in a low-heat oven or microwave briefly. Quickly place melted peeps on graham cracker squares and top with squares of chocolate and another graham cracker. Press together to make Peep S'mores. To make these while camping, toast peeps on a stick over an open campfire--but be careful, because that extra sugar on the outside browns very quickly.

  5. Step 5

Cut bottoms off peeps with a sharp knife and press them onto the top of cupcakes or brownies, especially while the baked good is still warm, to make Peep Cakes.

  6. Step 6

Age peeps by puncturing their cellophane wrappers and keeping refrigerated for at least 1 week. Remove and enjoy the extra chewy texture of Vintage Peeps.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy extra peeps when they are available; you can freeze them, but they will all be Vintage Peeps when they thaw.
  • Watch peeps very carefully when heating; they can quickly become Molten Peeps and then Charcoal Peeps.
  • Peeps have up to 5,000 times as many carbs as you need per day, and no other nutritional value, so eat them sparingly.
