Massage can have amazing results in the relaxation and relief of someone. Working with soft body tissues, a therapeutic massage is one of the most effective kind of massages. It isn't very hard to learn. It just takes practice and concentration in following simple steps to success!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Masseuse
  • Client
  • Massage table
  • Towel
  • Orthopedic pillow
  • Massage oil
  1. Step 1

When starting out, it's important to realize that you are going to be using four central things in order to give someone a therapeutic massage. Vibration, tension, and motion will also be forces used on the soft tissue cells. For this sort of therapy, you must set aside at least an hour.

  2. Step 2

Position the receiver of your massage on the table correctly. You want to have them relaxed and supported. Feel free to use helpful aids such as an orthopedic pillow for maximum positioning and comfort!

  3. Step 3

Start with a specific muscle group. You will generally want to start with one area of the body, then work your way around. I recommend starting with someone's feet. It will relax them more easily and it connects with so much of the body in ways few realize. It also seems less invasive, allowing someone to start from a relaxed position.

  4. Step 4

Start slowly, with little effort at force. Slowly increase effort and pressure, working deeply into the muscle and tissues. Easing into is imperative, as you don't want the muscle to tighten in defense. Relaxation is key.

  5. Step 5

Use six fingers. This provides maximum control and pressure. Make sure the area is thoroughly released and relaxed before moving to another area of muscles in the body. Create tension in some areas, then relieve them through kneading. Use friction on some areas to get them relaxed. It's important to completely focus on how one's body is reacting to the touch of the massage. Every massage, you'll find, is different, and it needs to be handled in response to one's own body.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the same process with the next muscle group. It's important to always start slowly. The body is now getting to a more relaxed state. You should engage in only enough conversation to make sure the receiver of your massage is alright, relaxed and to see if they have any needs. Feedback is encouraged, but shouldn't be mandatory.

  7. Step 7

Work your way all over one's body in this process. As you work the tissues in the deep massage therapy, some parts of the body will be effected by what you are doing in other areas. The entire body should have a relaxed release at the end of the massage!

Tips & Warnings
  • Encourage feedback from the receiver of your massage. While it should be about them, letting them feel free to express themselves and desires within the massage is fantastic.
  • Be flexible. Concentrate on the way of massaging that is helpful, healthy, and that works for you. Yet, be willing to change and tailor it to the individual. What feels good on someone may hurt another.
  • Anxiety can get relief through a massage. It's a great idea to give massages to those who are nervous or anxious. On days when you are feeling that way, schedule a deep therapeutic massage for yourself when possible. It will help you better deal!
  • Don't massage someone for profit without obtaining the proper licenses! In most places, you must be a licensed masseuse or massage therapist in order to work it as a business!
  • Don't force someone to give feedback, or chat with you, while they are receiving a massage. It should be a time of relaxation where minimum demands are made on a person. Voluntary feedback is, of course, a welcome thing.
  • Never comment on someone's body during a massage, other than for instructions or questions necessary for the work.
  • Don't work with less clothes on someone than you are comfortable with. You can always massage through clothing!
