Pole bending has been an equestrian event for several years. It is popular among people who like to compete in timed riding events, where speed is more important then skill. In addition to 4-H and open horse shows, many rodeos have added pole bending to their list of events.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing you have to keep in mind when preparing to compete in pole bending is that just owning a fast horse and wanting to do well is not always enough to win events. The more time you spend practicing and training the more successful you will be when it is your turn to cross the time line.

  2. Step 2

Run as fast as you can from one end of the poles to the other.

  3. Step 3

As you are passing the last pole, you will turn your horse around the pole and begin weaving your way through the poles. Every time you start to weave a pole your horse should change its lead, flying lead changes are faster then simple lead changes.

  4. Step 4

At the end pole turn a complete circle around the pole and weave your way back to the other end. Make sure you change your horse’s leading leg between each pole.

  5. Step 5

When you have completed your turn around the final pole, you will race your horse, as fast as you can, in a straight line back across the timer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Participating in any riding activity without a properly fitted and fastened ASTM/SEI approved helmet can result in a serious brain injury.
