Things You'll Need:
- Paper towels (lay in a good supply)
- Newspapers
- Puppy treats
- Baby gate or kennel
- The whole family's cooperation
- Patience and good temper
- Lots of love
-
Step 1
Canines are bright and they are creatures of habit. Spend time throughout the day with your puppy. Regularly take him outside or for walks. It will be fun and it's an opportunity for other important training.
-
Step 2
Reward him when he does good. Praise is best and a little treat won't hurt him. Make a big deal out of the event.
-
Step 3
Provide food and water at consistent times. If you want to leave water down, remember that he's just a little guy. He can hold only so much. Take him outside. (See Step 1) Don't feed or water close to your bedtime.
-
Step 4
In the early days or weeks, you might want to give him an enclosed area. Make him comfortable and spend time with him. If you work, some people use a kennel. That seems to work on a case-by-case basis.
-
Step 5
If the little fellow has an accident in the house, don't yell or make a huge issue of it. Show him his "mess," say "no, no." Then take him outside. He will understand. Plus, he will equate going outside with "doing his business."
-
Step 6
Remember that with house training as with all other aspects of having a pet, you need to spend time with him. He needs the reassurance of your presence and is less likely to act out.
