Quilting is a symbol of tradition that is woven with love. Immortalized in history and even modern-day films, such as "How To Make An American Quilt," making a quilt is a sentimental journey.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Square patches of fabric, at least four inches a side
  • Thimble
  • Quilting thread
  • Fabric pencil
  • Fabric scissors
  • Quilting needle
  • Ruler
  • Fabric pins
  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of quilt you would like to make. Some people take old clothes and scrape them into a quilt to be treasured forever. Some people even do it as a memory to a loved one who has passed. When throwing out clothes seems unbearable, they recycle them and give new life to the fabrics. When your child has outgrown her baby clothes, a toddler blanket is a great use for your creative quilt. These are just a couple of suggestions. The possibilities are obviously unlimited.

  2. Step 2

Now that you've picked your pieces, cut them into the shapes you want to use for the quilt. It's advised that they be similar shapes, though any sort of creative pattern can be used. When you are a beginner, use something simple like a square. When you have experience, then branch out and do the risky stuff.

  3. Step 3

Iron the patches for your quilt. Have them in pristine condition for sewing.

  4. Step 4

Lay the patches into possible designs and sequences. The proper placement for each piece of fabric will soon come to you. When you have your design, lay them all face down in the order that you want them to be seen on the quilt.

  5. Step 5

Using the fabric pencil and an aligned ruler, mark a place on the material that is a 1/4 inch from its edges. Your seam allowance has been created when you've done this for all the squares.

  6. Step 6

Use fabric pins to connect all of the pieces of the quilt in the way that you ultimately want them.

  7. Step 7

Now, simply sew along those lines! Do it until it is a foot square. Then, start a new part, making sure it is also stopped at a foot square. Do that until you have the full length of your quilt completed.

  8. Step 8

For backing, take the square-foot blocks and material to a quilt guild.

  9. Step 9

Now true quilting begins! Design your quilt how you want it and sew it all together. It's a fun rush of creativity when you see all you're accomplishing along the way. Best of luck in creating your timeless treasure for your loved ones (or even yourself)!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be extremely cautious when knitting around children. Make sure that the needle is out of their reach.
  • Pick fabrics with a theme or purpose. The best quilts can tell a story!
  • Don't throw out old clothing until the quilt is complete. You never know what can happen when making a quilt, and you might need more material.
  • Don't take quilting too seriously. It's a time-honored tradition, but it's one of fun and love.
  • Don't quilt alone. You should share your passion with others. Victorian ladies often had "sewing circles," and it's a great idea for a gathering.
  • Don't ever leave a needle lying around. Have a safe place for a needle to go at all times.
  • Don't rush yourself when making a quilt. It's worth the time.
