How to Avoid Spending too Much At Christmas

Christmas time is a bad time for going way over budget on gifts, decorations and various other things. The first thing you need to do to cut down your expenses during the holiday season is to take a good long look at where you spend most of your money. Is there another place where you can buy the same things at a cheaper price? That is what you need to ask yourself. Much of what we buy at Christmas can also be purchased at Closeout stores or even dollar stores. Places like Wal-Mart are another option.

Check your shopping list very carefully. Need to get someone a new sweater? Try one of the big department stores and look for a sale if they are having one. Want to buy someone a cell phone? Same thing. Shop around and get the best prices you can. Don't buy a lot of expensive little trinkets for stocking-stuffers. If you want a bunch of little things, go to the nearest dollar store with about 20 or 30 bucks and have a blast buying stocking stuffers. You will have to be selective, though, because sometimes dollar store stuff can be very cheaply made and fall apart easily.

If you are planning a Christmas party you will of course need refreshments and music. Depending on how many people you plan to invite, this could get very expensive. Buying food on sale is a good idea, as long as it is still fresh, and buying inexpensive food and drink to begin with will help you with your budget as well. Try not to spend a fortune on gift wrapping paper, which will be ripped to shreds 10 seconds after the youngest child wakes up on Christmas morning. Grab the Sunday funnies and wrap the children's toys in those. They will not only get to unwrap a gift, they might take a little longer to do it if they feel the need to read a comic strip or two in the process. This will help them enjoy Christmas more and get more out of it.

Make sure that when you start planning your Christmas budget you stay on your budget and don't go even one penny over it. Look around to make sure you can get all that you need without having to travel endless miles and waste a lot of gas. Order stuff online if you can find better prices that way, or order from some of the catalogues that will inevitably end up at your door at that time of the year. When you buy ornaments, make sure they are sturdy ones that will last a few years so that you can use them over and over again. Not buying new ones each year saves a lot of money. Also, buying pretty Christmas boxes and bags rather than gift wrap is a savings as well, as they both can be used multiple times if care is taken. Just tell the gift recipient that you would like the package back to use again. Most people are happy to oblige, unless they want to use the package themselves next year.

Don't go overboard on the gift buying. Buy only what is within your budget and not a penny more for each person. Don't buy what appeals to you, buy what you know will appeal to the person you are buying for even if it means buying something that you don't really like. Remember, it's not you that you are buying for, and you want to get that person something that he or she will really like. If you don't know what that person might like, try for something basic, like a bathrobe or a pair of bedroom slippers. Chances are you will not go wrong with something like that.

Tips & Warnings
Buy things when they are on sale, for instance, during the after-Christmas sales events when all the Christmas merchandise goes to half price or less.
Buy gifts on sale too, even if it means you have to store them in your closet for 7 months. It's a lot cheaper in the long run.
