Sweet onions are delicious in so many recipes, so it's a good idea to keep a supply handy. But a bag full of onions can easily become bruised, and onions kept in the dark have a tendency to sprout. The ideal way to store sweet onions is in an onion hanger, which you can make from a nylon stocking or one leg of a pair of pantyhose.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New or freshly laundered pantyhose or nylon stockings
  • Bag of sweet onions

How to Make an Onion Hanger

  1. Step 1

Use new or freshly laundered nylons. If using pantyhose, cut off one leg at the top of the thigh.

  2. Step 2

Cut off the foot and discard; tie cut end into a secure, overhand knot.

  3. Step 3

Insert one onion and shake it down to the knot.

  4. Step 4

Tie another overhand knot above the onion; insert another onion and repeat until you have about 10 inches of stocking left. End with a knot. Twist loose end into a loop and tie securely.

  5. Step 5

Hang onion hanger from kitchen cabinet door pull, from high towel rack, or even from a nail. Try to hang onion hanger so that it dangles in open air rather than resting against a surface. Use scissors to cut off onions as you need them, being sure to leave a knot at the bottom to hold the next-higher onion.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you only have 1 or 2 large onions, knee-high stockings will work.
  • The onion hanger can also be used for potatoes or any root vegetable.
  • Do not hang onion hanger in a location where it might catch fire from the stove.
