How to Estimate Square Footage

If you know the basic formula, estimating square footage can be a snap. Whether you want the square footage of a room, or your whole house, the formula is the same.

Instructions

1. Measure the length of the room. For estimates, don't bother with a detailed measurement. If your room is 13 feet, 10 inches, simply round to 14 feet.

2. Measure the width of the room. Again, round to the nearest number or half number. If the width of your room is 12 feet, 4 inches, round the number to 12.5 (12 ½) feet.

3. Multiply the two numbers. In this case, it would be 14 x 12.5 = 175 square feet.

4. If you want to estimate the square footage for your house, repeat this process for each room and then add the square footage of each room together. Meaning, if you had one room that was 175 square feet, a second room that is 100 square feet and a third room that is 65 square feet, it would be 175 + 100 + 65 = 340 square feet.

Tips & Warnings

• If you need more accurate square footage than rounding to the nearest whole or half number offers, simply round off to the nearest inch.
