How to Play a Rim Shot on a Snare

The rim shot is an essential element used in snare drum performance. Read this article to learn how to perform a rim shot of the type most commonly used in orchestral and concert band performances.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snare drum
  • Drumsticks
  1. Step 1

    Grasp the sticks in the style you are most accustomed to.

  2. Step 2

    Place the tip of the left stick in the center of the drum and leave the shank of the stick lying across the rim.

  3. Step 3

    Strike the left stick firmly with the right stick. You've just played a rimshot!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can vary the sound of the rimshot in several ways:
  • Lift the shank of the stick off of the rim while keeping the tip on the drum head.
  • Vary the placement of the left stick tip by sliding it away from the center of the drum. You'll notice that the pitch of the rimshot will vary depending on the left stick's location.
