When thinking about installing carpet or working with landscape, it's often useful to have some quick conversion tools handy. This will particularly help you when planning how much carpet you will need or landscaping products to buy, since different brands alternate between square feet and square yards.

From Quick Guide: Calculate Square Footage
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

How to convert square feet to yards

  1. Step 1

One square yard equals nine square feet. Or, 1 sq. yd. = 9 sq. ft.

  2. Step 2

Divide the number of yards by nine, and you'll get the number of square feet of carpet you'll need.

  3. Step 3

If you don't yet know how many square feet you have, measure the length and width of the area. Then divide that total by nine.

In other words: (Length in ft. x width in ft.)/9 = sq. yds.

Tips & Warnings
  • With landscaping products, remember that you will need to take the depth of the product you will need into account. Some landscaping products list their square yardage in terms of a stated depth. So, for instance, if you are going to use topsoil to a depth of six inches and the bag lists yardage for three inch depth, you will need to use double the amount.
