Being part of a therapeutic riding program can put to use skills learned as a physical therapist, riding instructor, teacher or child development professional. The format for most programs is aimed at occupational therapy for injured or mentally disabled people.

  1. Step 1

    To join a therapeutic riding program, you first need to find one in your area. This can be done by looking the phone book, or searching the Internet.

  2. Step 2

    Try the key words therapeutic riding program and you will surely be able to find something in your area. If you are unable to find anything, ask local equestrian associations and clubs if they know of any nearby.

  3. Step 3

    Once you've located a group, simply call the contact listed, and ask for volunteer requirements.

  4. Step 4

    Volunteering to help the injured or disabled can be extremely rewarding, but you will need to have the time to give. Also being familiar with horses is surely helpful but not necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try scheduling your time on the weekdays, when help is needed more.
  • Always wear sturdy shoes around horses, even when you are not the one riding.
  • Always use caution around horses.
