How to Make Shrimp Gumbo

Make this shrimp gumbo filled with flavor and spice fo4 a hearty meal.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 pounds shrimp (deveined)
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 chopped onion
  • Butter
  • 1 small can of okra
  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1 small can of tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup chopped celery
  • 1/4 cup chopped green pepper
  • Dash of thyme
  • Dash of sage
  • 1/4 teaspoon marjoram
  • Chopped clove of garlic
  1. Step 1

    Melt about 2 tablespoons of butter in pot. Stir 2 tablespoons of flour into the butter.

  2. Step 2

    Add enough water to the mixture to form gravy.

  3. Step 3

    In a small skillet, saute okra in 2 tablespoons butter, then add to gravy mixture.

  4. Step 4

    Add tomatoes, green pepper, onion, celery, garlic, red pepper, and shrimp to gravy next. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

  5. Step 5

    Cover with 2 cups of water; simmer for 1 hour.

  6. Step 6

    After 1 hour remove red pepper; and add marjoram, thyme, and the sage. Simmer for 30 more minutes. Serve with steamed rice. Recipe is for 4 to 6 servings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wash your hands after handling peppers.
  • If you don't like okra, just omit it from the recipe.
