If you are a ref, you should know how to properly signal a kicked ball in a basketball game.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic basketball referee skills
  1. Step 1

When the referee sees a kicked ball, the first thing they should do is blow their whistle to stop play.

  2. Step 2

As the referee raises a flat hand into the air, signifying a violation, they should simultaneously put either foot in the air and simulate a kicking motion, moving their foot back and forth a few times.

  3. Step 3

A kicked ball is a violation and the ball should be taken out of bounds. Kicked ball violations are usually taken out of bounds on the side of the court, as opposed to under the basket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Kicked balls are usually easy to spot, as defenders will often kick out their legs to try to deflect a pass. But it is important to remember that a kicked ball is reserved for violations that are done on purpose. This means that if a offensive player throws the ball into the leg of a defensive player who is stationary, it should not be a kick ball.
  • When a ball is accidentally hit off of someone's leg, it is a live ball and no whistles should be blown.
