If you are a ref, you need to know how to properly signal a hand-check violation in basketball.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic basketball referee skills

    The Hand Check

  1. Step 1

The first thing the referee should do (as with every violation) is blow their whistle to stop play.

  2. Step 2

The referee should then make a fist one with hand and point it straight into the air. This signals a foul. With the other hand made totally flat, the ref should point at the player who committed the foul.

  3. Step 3

The referee should then make the hand check signal, signifying that the violation was in fact a hand check. This is done by grabbing one of their wrists with the other hand. It does not matter which hand grabs which wrist.

  4. Step 4

The same hand-check signal should also be made to the scores table when the referee is telling the scorekeeper the foul information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hand checks are normally called along the perimeter and in the painted-area if a player is posting up.
  • It is important to remember that some contact is allowed and that a hand-check violation should be called when the defender gains any sort of advantage as a result of their hand check.
