Things You'll Need:
- Small onion or ¼ cup onion bits
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- ½ tsp. liquid smoke flavoring
- ½ tsp. lemon juice (can be from concentrate)
- ¼ cup brown sugar substitute
- 1 ½ cups ketchup
- 1/8 cup mustard
-
Step 1
Chop the onion. (I use real onion because it tastes better and because I love sautéed onions.) You want at least ¼ cup of onion, finely chopped. Place the chopped onion in a small pot and turn heat to medium. Add butter or margarine. Mix onions and butter or margarine until butter is melted. Sautee onions for at least 6 to 7 minutes or longer if you like yours to brown some.
-
Step 2
Add the liquid smoke flavoring, lemon juice and brown sugar substitute. Make sure the sugar substitute is mixed well with the liquid ingredients.
-
Step 3
Add the mustard and ketchup to the onion and brown sugar mixture and stir. Let mixture come to a bubble and then reduce heat to low and let simmer for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, take mixture off burner and let cool at room temperature.
-
Step 4
Use the barbecue sauce on your favorite meat, or as a dipping sauce, once sauce is cooled.
