Can cooking be a part of your homeschooling curriculum? Absolutely! You can teach measurement, fractions and more through cooking. But first, you need to figure out how to manage children in the kitchen!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Aprons or old clothing
  • Small, child-sized table
  1. Step 1

Prepare. The most important part of managing cooking tasks with children is to be prepared. Decide on what you are going to cook or bake and gather all your materials and ingredients so that you have them ready to grab.

  2. Step 2

Manage your space. Small children can't reach up to high kitchen counters. Pull a kid-sized table near your counter and cover it with newspaper or waxed paper. Give each child their own space in which to work.

  3. Step 3

Explain and demonstrate. Before you hand out the utensils and ingredients, explain each step to your children before you begin. Small hands will be eager to get going, so demonstrate before handing out the materials.

  4. Step 4

Assist. Monitor each child as they cook and measure. Enlist their help in assisting others who need it.

  5. Step 5

Assign. Assign a place to put used utensils when they are finished. Enlist their help with the clean up. Small children love to help in the kitchen even if it means wiping down tables or sweeping the floor!

Tips & Warnings
  • Enlist the help of your children for as many tasks as you can from slicing, dicing, portioning out ingredients and clean up!
  • Always use blunt cutting utensils when children are involved!
