When first learning to throw a straight right hand, whether it be while training for your first fight or simply for exercise purposes, it is important to remember that much of the power for this punch is delivered from your legs and hips. Twisting your body into the punch is essential, as the straight right hand is classified as a knockout punch, requiring a maximum amount of force. The straight right should be set-up with a solid left jab, so make sure that you've mastered the left jab before attempting to tackle the straight right. Understanding each punch in-depth will lead to a series of combinations that will satisfy both the amateur boxer and the fitness buff.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Full length mirror
  • Boxing gloves
  • Heavy bag
  1. Step 1

Position your body directly in front of a full length mirror. This will enable you to observe both your shoulder position as well as your foot work. Being right handed, ensure that your left foot is placed in front of your right, as you will be leading with the left side of your body at all times.

  2. Step 2

Keeping your hands in front of your chin, begin to push off using your right foot. This will cause your body to twist, generating much of the power for the straight right. Your hips should be moving toward the intended target, as well.

  3. Step 3

Move your right arm forward, moving through your intended target, using your right hand as a guide.

  4. Step 4

Your hips should cease forward progress when squared with your opponent (or heavy bag), but only after you've connected your right hand with the intended target.

  5. Step 5

Now that you've connected, recoil your arm back to your chin as quickly as possible not only to protect yourself from the possibility of a counter-punch, but also to ready yourself for another timely combination.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keeping a wider stance will result in a stronger base, enabling you to a throw a more effective straight right. Remember, most of the power for this knockout punch emanates from your legs and hips, so plant them at their most powerful position.
  • Improving leg strength and hip flexion/extension will solidify your base, leading to increased power for your straight right.
  • If, at any time, you begin to feel increasing pressure on the right shoulder, cease all activity and consult a physician.
