A heartfelt, handmade book full of Thank You notes is a wonderful way to make someone feel loved and appreciated on Valentine’s day or any day. Kids can make an “I Appreciate You” book with minimal help and supervision. The book can be made for just one person, parents or grandparents, a special friend, a teacher or a whole family. You only need some basic craft supplies to make an “I Appreciate You” book, and it can be as simple or as creatively decorated as you want.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 pieces of red paper
  • Several sheets of plain paper
  • Hole punch
  • Red ribbon, curling ribbon or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Markers, crayons or colored pencils
  • Heart or happy face stickers (optional)
  • Family photos (optional)

    Make the Book

  1. Step 1

Stack the 2 pieces of red paper on top of each other.

  2. Step 2

Punch 3 holes along one edge of the sheets of red paper. You can use a 3-hole punch, a single hole punch or a decorative hole punch such as a heart.

  3. Step 3

Punch 3 holes in each of the sheets of plain paper in the same places as the holes in the red paper.

  4. Step 4

Place the stack of plain paper on top of one sheet of red paper, lining up the holes. Place the other sheet of red paper on top of the plain paper so that the red papers form a cover.

  5. Step 5

Cut a piece of ribbon or yarn about 10-inches long.

  6. Step 6

Insert the ribbon or yarn through one of the holes and tie it in a knot. Tie the ends of the ribbon or yarn into a bow, or, if using curling ribbon, carefully curl the ends of the ribbon.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the other 2 holes.

  8. Fill in and Decorate the Book

  9. Step 1

Write “I Appreciate You...” and the name of the person you’re giving it to on the cover of the book.

  10. Step 2

Decorate the cover with hearts, a drawing or photo of the recipient, or stickers.

  11. Step 3

On the first plain page, write your name (who it’s from) and the date.

  12. Step 4

On the rest of the plain pages, write something specific you appreciate about the special person you’re giving it to. For example, “Mommy, I appreciate that you tuck me in at night” or “Teacher, I appreciate the way you read stories to our class.”

  13. Step 5

Decorate each page with hearts and drawings or photos of the things you appreciate about that person.

Tips & Warnings
  • In addition the things you appreciate, you can fill the book with things you’re thankful for or things you love about the recipient. For example, “Mommy, I love the sweet smell of your hair,” or “Daddy, I’m thankful for the times we play ball together,” or “Grandpa, I love the way you laugh.” Keep it simple and sincere. The spelling doesn’t have to be perfect to make a heartfelt Valentine.
