      Classroom layout

Notice how large or small the classroom is itself. How much room do the children have to move around? Are they bumping into furniture or one another? If so, you may need to rearrange your furniture. Children are like adults in that they like their space too. If they receive too little space they may behave in inappropriate ways.

      Classroom schedule

What kind of activities do you do on a daily basis? Do you follow an established routine or do you decide what activities to do based on your mood daily? According to child psychologists, children need routines to establish positive behavior. This helps children know what’s going to happen next instead of fretting about what’s going to happen. They don’t need to be stressed out at school.

      Too loud

Assess the noise level. How loud is your classroom? Do other teachers or parents discuss how loud it is on a daily basis? If so, it is time to get the noise under control. One method is to treat the class as a whole and award them points for every period when they are quiet. Rewarding them with extra computer time, prizes, or recess time really encourages them to keep the noise down. Changing the entire environment will affect their behavior for the greater good.
