1
Get the bandana to the right size. Traditionally folded in half in a triangle, this presents a problem with keeping it on top of your head. In its folded size, it's barely large enough to cover the circle of your head from forehead to back. If you don't put it low enough on your forehead, it will come up a bit at a time until it is on top of your head. The solution is to fold it a bit under 2 inches short of a full half. By making the triangle larger, it will be more likely to stay in place.

Put your hair in a ponytail. Position the bandana where you like it the most in front, keeping in mind that a lower position is best for keeping it in place.

3
Bring the ends to the back of your head. Tie one knot above your ponytail. Then, using the same method of quick tying, tie a knot firmly beneath the ponytail. Make sure to tighten both knots to keep the bandana firmly in place.

Fold the bandana in the following way if you want the bandana to cover your entire head, as another option. Lay a bandana flat on a table to where the square ends are positioned to make a triangle on top and bottom. Take about 6 inches down from the top triangle, and fold this small area towards you. Pick up the bandana, holding the 6 inches folded towards you. Turn it upside down, with the 6 inches folded under lying over your forehead, and throw the rest of the bandana back as though it were a wig on your head. Pull the ends together, eventually pulling them all tightly together. This forms a bow. You should pull the tips down until it is secure. You can make a knot, though this isn't always necessary.
