Curl Hair with Flat Irons

For medium, thick or coarse hair, it is ideal to flat iron and wrap hair for the longest lasting curls. This article explains how to flat iron hair with curls and volume tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb with a stem on the end
  • Feather comb
  • Wide-toothed brush
  • Hair wrap
  1. Step 1

With medium, thick or coarse hair, it is difficult to curl hair with flat irons, and using a head wrap is suggested. At night or at least a couple hours before you are about to style your hair, part your hair in whichever way you prefer. Then, with a wide-toothed brush, brush the left, right, and back side down numerous times. When it is flat, take your brush and start to brush hair from either the left or the right front side of your hair in a circular motion so your hair starts to wrap around your scalp. Only brush in small parts. If you brush too much hair at one time, a lump of hair will form in the center of your head. If your hair will not wrap in a flat form, try Luster's Pink lotion, which is designed to set hair, especially under a blow dryer. When your hair is brushed into a tight wrap, tie a head wrap around your head.

  2. Step 2

When you are ready to curl your hair with a flat iron, unwrap your head wrap. (For those with thin hair, wrapping hair may not be necessary.) Take a feather comb to comb your hair out evenly into the style you fancy, starting with the edge of your hair. If you have already parted your hair in one spot once it is combed out, it is recommended not to ruin the part or shape of the wrap by changing the form of your hair. Take the stem of a fine-toothed comb and part your hair into small spots at a time. Holding the handle of the flat iron, start from the hair closest to your scalp, slide the flat iron to the tip of your hair, and turn the flat iron the way you would usually turn a curling iron. With a combination of a hair wrap and flat iron, this should add a little more bounce.

  3. Step 3

After curling your hair completely with small chunks of hair, take the feather comb and lightly comb your hair in an oval motion. Try not to comb it straight down because it will ruin the curls in your hair. If you'd like more volume, take your feather comb and comb it in such a way that your wrist flicks slightly up and down as you comb your hair down.

  4. Step 4

The process for curling hair with a flat iron can also be reversed. If your hair is dry, try flat ironing it first and then wrapping it for longer curl time. For medium, thick, or coarse hair, the curls last longer if your hair is wet, you wrap it and sit under a hair dryer, and then flat iron it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to flat iron your hair everyday. Too much constant heat on a scalp can cause breakage and split ends. Flat iron hair once or twice a week and wrap hair the other five or six days.
