Things You'll Need:
- An audition appointment
- Sides or a script
- Access to clothing options
- Full-length mirror
-
Step 1
Review the name and description of the role. You should have received some basic information about the character you are auditioning to play. Use that information to guide you toward a clothing choice. For example, if the character is described as a Midwestern teacher, you will want to choose something simple and modest. But if the character description or sides say that the character is a street-smart prostitute, a modest outfit will not work. Because auditions are typically short, the director and casting director will not have a lot of time to decide if you are right for the role. If you take away some of the guess work by dressing like the character, you will make it easier for the powers that be to visualize you in you role. This will give you a leg up on other actors.

Step 2
Check the fit of your clothes. In addition to looking the part, you should also look good in your audition outfit. Regardless of what your figure is, make sure that your clothes flatter your shape. Wear clothes that accentuate your most positive features. You may want to consult a style guide to find out what clothes look best on your frame. Even a costume-type outfit can be tailored or adjusted to your personal shape. Nicely fitted clothes look better than baggy clothes. So unless the role calls for you to dress sloppily, wear clothes that fit you well.

Step 3
Practice in your costume. In addition to looking like the character you are auditioning to play and looking good in your costume, you should also be comfortable in what you choose to wear to your audition. If you have the audition sides in advance of the audition, put on your audition outfit and practice the script. This will let you know whether or not you feel comfortable in your clothes. Because being uncomfortable in what you are wearing will affect your performance negatively. Make sure that your audition wear allows you to move and breathe comfortably. You want to be able to express yourself freely. Being able to fully commit to your character without being restricted by your clothing will enhance your audition as much as the correct clothing choice will.
-
Step 4
Check your hair and/or makeup. Your hair and makeup is part of your looks, so don't forget to make sure both look right. Like your clothing choice, you hair and makeup should match the feel of the character that you are auditioning to play.
-
Step 5
Touch up when you arrive. When you get to your audition location, find a restroom and take a minute to adjust your outfit. This way, you can smooth out wrinkles that appeared during the drive, reapply makeup that has faded or smooth hair that has been mussed by the wind so that you will be well-dressed and ready for your closeup.
