Need to apply lip color? Lipstick adds the final touch to a polished look whether you’re going to the office or on a night out. Follow these steps to learn how to apply lip color perfectly every time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a lipstick color. Pick out a lip liner pencil that is close to your lipstick shade.

  2. Step 2

Prep your lips for application. Start with clean, smooth lips. If you have chapped lips, apply some lip balm.

  3. Step 3

Apply lip liner (optional). For long lasting lip color, define your lips with a sharpened lip liner and fully fill in your lips. Do not draw outside the lips with the lip liner.

  4. Step 4

Apply lipstick to the top and bottom lips using the lipstick tube or a lipstick brush for application. Press lips together to even out the color. Instead of lipstick, you could use lip gloss for softer color or shine.

  5. Step 5

Keep lip color from bleeding by lightly patting your lips with face powder to set the color, then re-apply lipstick. Pat your lips with powder again and you’re done. Or for a moist look, you can re-apply the lipstick on top for smudge-proof color that lasts longer.

  6. Step 6

Check the mirror to see if the lipstick is evenly applied. Smile and check that there isn’t any on your teeth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a lip color that complements your skin tone, which is similar to your natural lip color.
  • You can test out lip colors at makeup stores to find the best shades.
  • If your lips tend to get dry, creamy lipsticks and gloss (instead of matte lipsticks) work better.
  • For health reasons, do not share your makeup with anyone.
  • Make sure you use a matching lip liner and color in your lips fully with the pencil, or you will get an ugly harsh outline around your lips when your lipstick color fades but your liner does not.
