A technical foul is rare and is typically only called in the most extreme circumstances. A technical foul may be called if a player argues with the referee or fouls another player aggressively. Here is how to signal for a technical foul as a referee in basketball.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

As an official, you must whistle the play dead to let everyone involved know about the violation. Technical fouls are often given when play is stopped. If this is the case, the whistling is more to make everyone aware of the violation rather than to stop play.

The signal for a technical foul is making a T with your two arms. Take one arm and make it parallel to the ground, and take your other hand and point it upwards touching your wrist.

  3. Step 3

Afterwards, signal to the scorers' table who committed the technical foul and why.

Tips & Warnings
  • Every referee has his own style of calling technical fouls.
  • Make sure that your style is recognizable enough that everybody knows when you are actually calling a technical foul.
  • Remember that two technical fouls results in an ejection. Don't give anyone a technical foul unless they are committing a serious offense.
