How to Make Thousand Island dressing

Did you know that Thousand Island salad dressing is named after a real place? The Thousand Islands are a string of just that--islands--in upstate New York dotted with beautiful resorts like the one in the picture. This salad dressing was developed by one of the resort owner's chefs after a boatload of hungry fisherman came for dinner. It's easy to duplicate at home using this recipe. Read on to learn how to make Thousand Island dressing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Ketchup or chili sauce
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Measuring cups
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Optional: hard boiled eggs
  1. Step 1

    Measure 1/2 cup mayonnaise (lite or regular) into bowl.

  2. Step 2

    Add 2 to 3 tbsp. ketchup or chili sauce and 1 tbsp. sweet pickle relish. Salt and pepper to taste.

  3. Step 3

    Mix with spatula, and turn into small covered dish or Tupperware container.

  4. Step 4

    Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

  5. Step 5

    Serve over iceberg lettuce wedges with sliced tomatoes and hard boiled eggs as garnish.

Tips & Warnings
  • Chili sauce will add a bolder flavor.
  • Add more pickle relish for a sweeter dressing.
  • Lite mayo will reduce the calories and fat content.
  • You can also add three to four diced chopped hardboiled eggs into the dressing for a heartier option.
