How to Use Chalk in Your Scrapbook Layouts

Scrapbooking has grown in popularity, with craft stores and greater selections and choices for scrapbooks. One choice that is fun to use in scrapbooking is chalk. As opposed to markers and pens previously set aside for use in scrapbooks, chalk offers more artistic freedom. Scrapbook chalks can be used in any kind of craft, but are designed specifically for your needs in creating a beautiful scrapbook. They can be used to add highlights and shading to diecuts, punch art, stamping, lettering, cardstock, patterned papers and vellum.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scrap paper
  • Acid-free scrapbook chalk
  • Cotton balls
  • Cotton swabs
  • Foam applicator
  • Chalk eraser
  • Acid-free spray fixative
  1. Step 1

Select the right kind of chalk for the project you are doing. A simple set of scrapbook chalks will do well for most projects. If you have a certain project in mind (pastel for Easter or perhaps bold colors for a birthday), you want to make sure your chalks will match or contrast the theme of your book. For the protection of your book, get only authentic scrapbook chalks or ones that are acid-free.

  2. Step 2

Start the process by getting out a piece of scrap paper, one that is the same color or texture as the one you will be using for the final project. Get out different tools to help you along, and start experimenting. Start off with a light color, then go darker. Start with a little bit of chalk, then add more. By doing a bit at a time, you can always add more. If you start with a bunch, it's impossible to take it away. You don't want to have start over time and again!

  3. Step 3

Experiment with what kind of tool works best for different effects. Try a cotton swab on a smaller project. For larger ones, try a firm foam applicator. This can provide more firmness for all-over color. A paper towel rolled up can work for some, while others have even tried using a tampon for scrapbook chalking. Although it may seem absurd, some swear by its effect.

  4. Step 4

Use different shades, or multiple shades in layers, to create some of the most beautiful effects. The possibilities are really endless with the chalks. You can create an entire book using the highlights of a color, giving a theme and consistency; or you can color a rainbow into your book with the chalks. Let your creative spirit be unleashed!

  5. Step 5

Consider a spray. The pigments in scrapbook chalks permanently set it after only a few hours. If you are going to use a scrapbook sleeve, I would say that no additional setting is necessary. For extra peace of mind, or if you are not using a sleeve, put an acid-free spray fixative over areas where the chalk was used. Let set, and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use only acid-free chalks that were designed for use in scrapbooks to preserve the archival quality of your photographs.
  • It's easy to fix scrapbook chalk goofs. Be sure to get an eraser designed for them before starting the project.
  • Don't use artists' pastel chalks unless they are labeled acid-free.
  • Don't stress over perfection. Sometimes the charm of a scrapbook is its uniqueness, including little flaws.
  • Practice caution when using glue; the chalk will stick to that glue.
