How to Tell if Your Tree frog is male or female

If you have a tree frog as a pet, you will probably want to know exactly what side of the forest it comes from before you get too involved. Telling whether your frog is male or female can help you determine what to name it and exactly what kind of jumper you have in your hands.

1. Notice the looks of the frog. The male and female tree frogs will have a different size, which is the first determination of what their gender is. Males will generally be smaller than the female frogs, averaging an inch to about two inches. Female frogs, however, will be about an inch longer, starting at two inches and being as big as three inches long.
2. Don't look away yet. If you are still not sure what type of frog it is by the size, you can always look at the spots and markings that are on the frogs. Typically, a male tree frog will have a darker tone underneath their chin, seen as a dark green. Female tree frogs will have a lighter color on their throat and will be recognized by a white spot. These same colors may also be in other places on their body.
3. Does your frog talk a lot? If you have a frog that likes to croak, especially at night, than you have a male frog. The females won't try to make any sounds, but for males this is a natural way to get in touch with females as a mating call. You will especially need to listen for the croaking at night, but may also hear it when other sounds or things are going on during the day.

• If you still can't tell what gender your tree frog is, take it to a vet or an individual who is specialized in caring for animals. They will notice the signs and will be able to help you out by probing the frogs to see what they are.
