Step 1
Know the space that you are working with. If you are outside or inside, you want to check to see the area that you are in and that the animal is in. This will help you to corner your pet into the right space, making it easier for you to keep them there. Not only should you know how the room or space is shaped, but observe where your pet is at the moment.
-
Step 2
If you can, enclose the area that you are in. If you are outside, make a small holding area by closing fences or putting a board over a certain area. If you are inside, close the door to the room that you are in. If you need to enclose corner areas with furniture, so they can't slip behind something, do that as well. The idea is to make it so that even if the pet slips from your hands, they won't be able to go too far.
-
Step 3
Approach your pet slowly. You will want to get on one side or another from them. Never try to catch them by going down the middle. To any animal, that will be a threat and they will run as soon as they see you.
-
Step 4
Don't run. If your pet sees you, and knows you are there to trap them, they are going to run the other way. You have the control of where they go and can easily walk them into a corner. Once they are in the corner, you can shift from side to side so they can't get out. This will make it easy for you to grab them quickly without them scattering to another area.
-
Step 5
Hold on and don't let go. You will want to grab your pet from the same side that you approached them on and will want to immediately move into a position where they can't move. For most animals, this is going to be like a hug around the neck or under the chin. When doing this, make sure that they can't move forward or backwards.
