How to PvP with a Mage in World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is the most popular online game ever, at least judging by subscription dollars. The membership dwarfs that of some small countries and getting online to step into a fantasy world populated with other people is easier than ever. And what do you do with other people once you join them in this fantasy world? Well, naturally, you try to kill them. And as a mage, you'll be doing that with magic.

Instructions

    • 1

Start levelling up. You won't be killing anyone as a low level character, so find a group (if possible) and grind out some levels as fast as you can.

    • 2

Place stat points in Intelligence. You'll want a few points in Stamina for health, possibly a few points in Agility for defense and a few points in Spirit for regeneration. But focus on Intelligence; high intelligence gives you both more mana and a slightly increased critical hit chance.

    • 3

Decide whether you will focus on Fire or Ice. There aren't really enough talent points to do both, so pick one of them and drop most of your talent points into that tree, saving a dozen or two for Arcane. You'll likely want Improved Arcane Missiles, Arcane Concentration and Evocation, and possibly Improved Arcane Explosion, Arcane Fortitude and Counterspell.

    • 4

Start your attacks at range. Whether you've chosen to fire off a few fireballs or blast away with a frost nova, you want to lead with a spell that does something useful. After that, you can either try to polymorph your opponent into a sheep, or attack with a frost blast or scorch.

    • 5

Use area affect spells when fighting multiple enemies. You can still lead with your frost nova or fireballs or arcane missiles, but then you should either cast a big blizzard or run around spamming arcane explosion. This should knock out any weak enemies and soften up the stronger ones.

    • 6

Equip yourself with the Gladiator's armor set if possible. You'll need to rack up some wins in the Arena to get it, but it's the best armor you can get for PvP.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you aren't impressed by Fire or Ice, you can skip both and dump all your talent points into the Arcane tree.

  • Don't get counterspelled by opposing mages. Be sure to drop your counterspell first.
