How to Properly Throw a Softball

Correctly throwing a softball is a fundamental that every player should master in order to be successful.

Things You'll Need:

  • An 11 inch softball for players under 12
  • A 12 inch softball for players over 12

    Throwing a softball

  1. Step 1

    Turn your body so that you are at a 90 degree angle to your target.

  2. Step 2

    Pull your arm back so that the elbow is behind your head and the ball is by your ear.

  3. Step 3

    Place all of your weight on your back foot.

  4. Step 4

    Point your glove at your intended target.

  5. Step 5

    Transfer your weight to your front foot while bringing your arm over your shoulder.

  6. Step 6

    Release the softball at shoulder level and follow through until your hand is by your hip. Snap your wrist at the release point.

Tips & Warnings
  • Like any skill, properly throwing a softball takes practice. Keep working at it.
  • Never throw the ball at someone who is not looking.
  • Practice in an open area, away from cars or buildings.
