Save money and make your own artificial nectar for hummingbird feeders. It's easy and the birds love it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • white sugar
  • water
  • medium saucepan
  • containter to store extra mixture in

Step1
In medium sized pan, measure 1 part sugar and 4 parts water. Boil.
Step2
Let mixture cool.
Step3
Fill your hummingbird feeder, and maintain it (see resources for details).
Step4
Store extra sugar/water mixture in your refrigerator. Try not to store it more than 5-7 days to avoid mold and mildew growth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hummingbirds are attracted to bright colored flowers. Hang your feeder over a flower bed of flowers or flower pot of brightly colored flowers.
  • Tie a red ribbon onto the top of your feeder.
  • It's not absolutely necessary to boil your sugar/water mixture. This is sometimes preferred to slow the growth of mold/mildew (see resources).
  • Bees tend to be attracted to the artificial nectar, be careful placing your feeder too close to your porch or deck.
  • It is not necessary to add red food coloring or honey. They actually may cause more harm to the birds (see resources).
