Riding a dirt bike through a deep rut up a hill in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Whether you are just visiting for fun or are in Thailand on business I recommend taking a day to adventure on dirt bike through Thailand's excellent woods and land.
You will learn the basic steps about adventuring on a dirt bike in Thailand.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money to travel with!
  • Time to travel
  • Perhaps a passion to ride dirt bikes or just a passion to adventure!
  1. Step 1

Before you can ride a dirt bike in Thailand you'll have to get there. I recommend shopping around for the best price first. The rainy season in Thailand is usually from April to sometimes September. If this is your first time and you do not want an incredibly tough time riding a dirt bike in Thailand, you should avoid coming during the rainy season.

  2. Step 2

Once settled in a hotel or guest house, look for some travel shops/agencies. These can range from official airline offices to home ran businesses. At least go to two or three of them to compare prices.

  3. Step 3

Some of the travel offices may offer tour packages. For your first time, you may like this, however I recommend not getting a tour package for dirt bike riding longer than a one or two days. You may not like it or may just be exhausted after the first day.

  4. Step 4

Most packages will include a rental dirt bike. If they do not, you will want to go to a few shops to find the best one for you. For beginners, a smaller bike, typically less than 250cc would be ideal. For the more experienced, you may want a 250-400cc engine. See tips for ideal bike choices.

  5. Step 5

Optional: If you have done this before, you may like to adventure on your own or with some friends, and may know some areas you can ride without a guide. If you go without a guide, I recommend taking a GPS as I have gotten lost quite easily as many trails looks so similar. You may also find people to ride with or areas to ride by going to dirt bike shops to talk to the mechanics or other foreigners who share a passion to ride dirt bikes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid doing this in the rainy season in Thailand (April - October)
  • In Thailand I've ridden from 150-400cc in the dirt bike class. I weigh about 180lbs and have good experience riding motorcycles in general. I find the 250cc to be enough power for my satisfaction. A 400cc can be very dangerous if not used by a skilled rider.
  • I recommend trying a Honda XR 250 if you are looking for a 250 even for most beginners. It has decent power but it's not as easy to lose control on the dirt as some more powerful bikes.
  • Being in a healthy condition is helpful.
  • I've ridden with many people, some who are 60+ years of age, smoke, and may have other health problems, and they still enjoy riding. Try this at your own risk but never push yourself more than necessary!

on 9/11/2009 I lived in Thailand for 17 years. A 400 cc bike on the back trails is a bugger to get off of you when you fall. And you will fall.
