save gas and improve your car's gas mileage

Simple tips on how to greatly improve gas mileage and save money at the pump without spending a dime!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A car
  • A foot
  • And a brain
  1. Step 1

The most obvious way to save gas while driving is to not floor it. Everyone knows this, but do you realize how often you do it?
When leaving a stop light or stop sign people tend to go faster than is needed, the smoother and slower you accelerate the less gas that is used. So next time your light turns green remember to only barely touch your gas pedal, besides there's probably another stop light waiting a few hundred feet away, so no reason to gain unneeded speed.

  2. Step 2

    The break pedal empties your precious fuel tank just as much, if not more than your gas pedal. Sound crazy? think of it this way;
Every time you apply the breaks thats momentum lost that has to be gained again by the use of more gas. When going down a hill don't break! set your speed up to about 5 miles below the speed limit (depending on steepness of said hill) and coast down, then use your momentum to propel your car with the use of less gas.
Also when making a turn that is more than 90 degrees use as little breaks as safely possible, coast to the corner, then when halfway through slowly apply the gas to build your speed back up.

  3. Step 3

Driving on the highway is where your skills in saving gas really shine. More distance can be traveled at a greater amount of speed while using less gas. This is because once your car is up to speed the only gas it needs is enough to maintain its current speed (which is very little). So once on the highway and up to your desired speed, set the cruise control! its much better at maintaining a constant speed than your silly foot.
And last but not least don't drive so much! if its not necessary don't leave your house. Stay home and read eHow!

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't turn your car off if not needed, more fuel is used cranking than when idling.
  • If possible lighten the load of your vehicle, the less weight your car carries the better mileage it gets.
  • Remember to always drive safely and follow all traffic laws.
