Things You'll Need:
- A vehicle
- Car battery
- Knowledge of your car
-
Step 1
Keep your car maintained on a regular basis. Many car dealerships and auto shops offer service specials based on your mileage, which you should follow roughly. By changing your oil, replacing air filters, and cleaning the fuel injection apparatus, you'll inevitably help your car battery.
-
Step 2
If you live in a warm or hot climate, try to keep your car garaged. When a vehicle sits in the hot sun day in and day out, the heat can have a negative impact on your car battery. In other words, it can drain it. Garage your car or park in the shade if possible.
-
Step 3
If you live in a cold climate, be sure to run your car every other day or so. Even if you don't drive much, warm your engine up once in awhile before you pull away.
-
Step 4
If you must stop your car while it's running, put it in park. One of the worst things to do to a car battery is keeping your car idle. This can hurt the battery and engine if done frequently.
-
Step 5
When you reverse your car, be sure to keep your foot on the brake and make a full stop before maneuvering your car into "drive."
-
Step 6
Drive! Driving recharges your car battery should it drain for some reason. If you notice you're having a hard time revving your engine up, bring your car in for a check-up.
