The art of cake decorating has long been admired. Elaborate cakes for weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions are always a delight to see and taste! With some practice, you can begin to create your own cake designs for your family and friends. Once you have mastered shaping your own rosebud, you will need to add the pretty green leaves. This embellishment is called a calyx, and is usually made with sugar gum paste. By following a few simple steps, you will be well on your way to completing the perfect rosebud for your cakes!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gum paste
  • Rolling pin
  • Calyx cutter
  • Extra soft foamboard
  • Ball tool
  • Water
  • Rosebud to attach your calyx to

    How to Make a Calyx With Gum Paste

  1. Step 1

    Roll gum paste with a rolling pin.

  2. Step 2

    Press the calyx cutter on the gum paste to carve out your design.

  3. Step 3

    Place newly cut calyx on a piece of extra soft foam board.

  4. Step 4

    Press the calyx, with the ball tool, to stretch and smooth leaves.

  5. Step 5

    Atttach the calyx to your rosebud stem. Add a dab of water and push the stem up through the center of the calyx.

  6. Step 6

    Shape the calyx around the rosebud. Press the bottom end of the leaves toward the rosebud and the upper ends of the leaves outward.

Tips & Warnings
  • The gum paste is very fragile to work with. Gentle handling when shaping is suggested.
