A hearty, healthy breakfast is a must if you want to begin your day the right way. Bacon, scrambled eggs and doughnuts aside, a traditional breakfast doesn't have to pack in the calories and clog your arteries. Swapping fatty foods for healthy alternatives is a great way to feel good the rest of the day. Learn how to make a power fueled breakfast to start your engine running right.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A blender
  • Your favorite fruits
  • Ice cubes
  • Wheat germ
  • Two eggs
  • Lean turkey bacon or veggie patties
  • Flax seed
  • Nonfat yogurt
Step1
Add several ice cubes to a blender. Mix in a cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt and add a spoonful of flax seed. Flax is great for your skin, heart and joints, as it is packed with vitamins and minerals.
Step2
If you want to work in protein, add a spoonful or two of wheat germ. Not only does it taste great, but it is chock full of protein, which will keep you full longer.
Step3
Add your favorite fruits. Mangoes, bananas, strawberries, kiwis and blueberries are great choices. Once you add your fruits into the blender, put the lid on and hit the "smoothie" button.
Step4
Once your smoothie mix is well-blended, set it aside. Break two eggs, being careful to leave the yolks in the shells. Scramble your egg whites with a little salt and pepper (to taste) in a frying pan.
Step5
Open up a package of lean turkey bacon and fry up a serving in a pan. Turkey bacon is an excellent source of protein that doesn't have the artery-clogging oil found in traditional bacon.
Step6
If you're a vegetarian and on the lookout for a healthy breakfast item, microwave or bake veggie patties, which are commonly sold in the frozen-food aisle. They're designed to taste like sausage, but without the fat and calories found in meat.
Step7
Feel free to have a cup of coffee to jumpstart your metabolism. As long as you don't down six cups a day, a little caffeine is actually a mood- and brain-booster.

Tips & Warnings

  • Swap coffee for orange juice for a vitamin-enriched alternative. Pick an antioxidant or calcium-fortified orange juice for added benefits.
  • Never skip breakfast! It's the most important meal of the day, as your metabolism kicks on based on what you fuel it with in the morning.
