Step 1
Determine what skills you have to offer as a consultant. Consultants offer services in all ranges of topics including computer programming, human resources, web design, sales and marketing and much more. Virtually any job can be outsourced to a freelancer, which is another name for a consultant. Once you know what you can do, you need to consider how to sell it.
-
Step 2
Establish yourself as a professional in the industry by getting business cards, getting a business license (if your city requires it) and by joining any types of trade organizations. Have a professional resume designed for yourself. Create a website to market your skills, services and to get clients interested. These will help your clients to know that you are a professional ready to serve their needs.
-
Step 3
Shop around other consultants and freelancers who may be offering services like your own. This gives you the ability to know what to charge others and allows you to see what the competition is offering that you may or may not be offering. Position yourself to be affordable but profitable.
-
Step 4
Network with others. Because starting a consulting business is rather easy to do, as it usually does not require a lot of initial expensive, networking is something that consultants need to work on from the start. This includes talking to old employers, employer's connections, those you know from business and personal life as well as many other people you come into contact with. Networking is the key to successfully establishing yourself and getting work.

Step 5
Follow through on proposals of offers, project bids and delivering the work you promise. This will establish you as a professional in the consultant business. It also helps you to work to build a clientele. Network with those people and ask for references. When you have done a good job, they will gladly recommend your services to those they work with.
