Almost everyone shops for a diamond at one time or another. The price of diamonds have almost doubled in just the last four years. If you do your homework, it's possible to save a lot of money when you buy diamonds.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • your local yellow pages
  • internet access
  • local jewelers
  • warehouse club membership
  1. Step 1

For the last eight years, I have bought my diamonds from a diamond wholesaler. They can be tricky to do business with because they primarily deal with selling to the middleman and insurance company referrals for people with insurance claims. If you can find them by doing some research, contact them and sweet talk them into dealing with you directly. Tell them you were referred by a coworker awhile back and see if that gets your foot in the door.

Warehouse clubs offer great prices on excellent quality diamonds and jewelry. This is where I used to shop before I started doing business with a wholesaler. Check the big clubs like Costco and Sam's Club, and take a look at their online inventory.

  3. Step 3

The internet can be a great source of discounted gems and jewelery because the jewelers have very low overhead and they can pass the savings onto you. Be cautious, make sure they have a return policy, and get your piece appraised to make sure you weren't taken advantage of. Buy from a credible company that has been around for awhile, and look for comments on them from others who have done business with the jeweler you are considering buying from.

  4. Step 4

Visit pawn shops to see what they have available, but again, be cautious and deal only with a reputable pawn shop that has a good reputation.

  5. Step 5

If your budget is very tight, consider buying the new cultured diamonds that are such great copies that even experienced jewelers have trouble distinguishing them from the real thing.

  6. Step 6

Cubic zirconia's are very budget friendly, and are also will pass for authentic diamonds.

  7. Step 7

There are many options available if you are in the market to buy a diamond but you want to save money by avoiding retail prices, or if your budget has severe constraints. Finding a diamond broker is ideal, but warehouse clubs and pawn shops also will have great diamond deals and discounts. If that doesn't work, you can always "fake it til you make it" with a cultured diamond or CZ. A diamond deal is truly a girl's best friend!

Tips & Warnings
  • Tell friends and family you are in the market for a diamond and see what they recommend.
  • Don't try to pass off a fake diamond for real if you really value your relationship.
