Granola is one of the most expensive types of cereal to buy at the grocery store, but it is one of the least expensive breakfast foods to make from scratch. Not only can you vary the ingredients according to what is available or what you really like to eat, you can make large or small batches. Home made granola stores well. Here's how to make it for your family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Cookie Sheet
  • 4 cups Oatmeal
  • 1 cup Chopped Nuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Figs (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Dates (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Wheat Germ
  • 1/2 cup Shredded Coconut
  • 1/2 cup Maple Syrup
  • 1/3 cup vegetable Oil
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Mace
  • 1/2 tsp. Salt
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees while you are mixing the batch of home made granola.

  2. Step 2

Mix the oatmeal, wheat germ, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, salt, cinnamon and mace in a large bowl. Stir until all these dry ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the entire mixture. This is the crunchy base of the home made granola.

  3. Step 3

Combine the honey or syrup with the oil in a measuring cup. Add the vanilla extract. Stir. Drizzle the liquid over the dried mixture in the large bowl. Stir until all of the granola is covered with the oil and syrup.

  4. Step 4

Spread the granola evenly onto a cookie sheet. Place it in the 200 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours.

  5. Step 5

Check the roasting granola every 15 to 20 minutes. Stir the granola each time so that the cereal browns evenly. Remove from the oven, and pour it into a large bowl.

  6. Step 6

Toss in the dried fruits and raisins. Mix to distribute them throughout the granola. Let the granola cool before placing it in an airtight container or zip closing plastic bag. Store it in the refrigerator.

  7. Step 7

Serve with milk or yogurt. You can also bring it on the go as a dry snack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Divide the granola in air tight plastic sandwich bags to make for easy grabbing on the go.
  • Don't let it cook too long. Keep an eye on your granola.
