How to Win at Scattergories

Even with all of the expansions in technology, classic board games remain popular with people and one of the most popular is the fast paced game Scattergories. In the game, a multi-lettered die is rolled and players have to answer categories starting with whatever letter the die lands on. There are many different ways to win this, but once you figure out your own way, then winning will be easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Get to know the game. It requires a lot of thinking, and you do not have a lot of time to do it so the more you play, the better you will become. You will begin to learn the categories that are coming up and can prepare for them.

    • 2

Do not go with the obvious answers. You lose points if one of your answers matches another player’s so if you think something is too obvious, try to change it as quick as possible.

    • 3

Skip over questions that do not come into your head right away. If you dwell on harder categories then you may miss out on easy points later in the round.

    • 4

Choosing the right utensil actually matters when you are playing the game. Get something that flows so you can quickly write your answer down. Pencils tend to write smooth and faster, but if you make a mistake, do not worry about erasing the word, just cross it out and write again.

    • 5

Use double words. You can earn double points for answers by using two words that start with the same letter. For example, “Bubble Bobble”, “Double Dragon”, or “Shiny Shoes” will get you two points instead of one. Chances are that another player will not have that same answer either.

    • 6

Try to avoid concentrating on spelling on a word. Try the best you can and as long you have the basic idea; the other players will understand what you are saying. This will give you more time to write out other answers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice as much as you can to gain the quick ability. Play other word games like Scrabble and Crosswords to help your knowledge.
