Step 1
Thrust. Make sure that your arm shoots out towards your opponent, and that this motion results in you hitting his jacket.

Lunge. Although a lunge is not necessary to score a touch, it provides a more concrete demonstration that your attack led to the hit. A judge is less likely to fail to score a lunge than a thrust with no lunge.

Step 3
Hit in the correct target area. In foil fencing, you can only score a touch on the torso.

Hit with the point of the foil. Slashing hits do not count in foil fencing.

Apply enough pressure. In electronic fencing, you need to exert at least 500 grams of pressure to score a hit. In non-electric foil fencing, you need to strike hard enough to bend the blade or dimple the jacket, showing the judge that you made contact.

Step 6
Tilt the blade up slightly. This will give you a nice "c curve," showing that the blade has made contact with your opponent.
