The pile of fashion sketches in front of you are lacking something. That something could be texture. A black and white outline of the sketch is going to pop off the page once you shade it in. You can shade texture on fashion sketches with ordinary items and in a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fashion sketches
  • Soft pencil, pastel, crayon or other shading medium
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of texture goes best with whatever sketch is in front of you. A thick miniskirt, for instance, wants a wooly texture.

  2. Step 2

Find an item that can reproduce that look. The wooly texture can be done with a flat, gritty rock.

  3. Step 3

Place the sketch over the item and gently shade the area with your shading medium, using small, circular motions. Press harder for a starker effect, more gently for a softer one.

  4. Step 4

Finish off the textured area with a bolder outline in the same color as the shading medium but with the texture material removed.

  5. Step 5

Go on to the next texture.

Tips & Warnings
  • You’ll be amazed at how many household or office items will lend themselves to reproducing texture. Some to try include placemats, wicker, stucco walls, stubby carpeting and even an array of unbent paper clips.
  • Use different colors to add depth.
  • Don't press so hard that the texture item rips the paper.
