Cook a Steak Medium Rare
Cook a Steak Medium Rare

Cooking a steak medium rare means that it should be warm all the way through, but with a pink center. Whether you choose to grill, broil, or pan fry your steak, medium rare gives you a crispy outer crust and juicy, chewable center.

From Quick Guide: Meat Broiling 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steak -any size, any cut
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • salt & pepper to taste

    BROILER

  1. Step 1

    Preheat broiler.

  2. Step 2

Season steak with Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Add any flavors you like to season the steak.

  3. Step 3

Place steak in broiler, cooking about 5 minutes on each side. When done, steak should be cooked well on the outside but pink in the middle.

  4. Step 4

Allow steak to rest for 2-3 minutes before cutting and serving.

  5. PAN FRY

  6. Step 1

Heat skillet on high heat. Allow skillet to get as hot as possible without smoking. If it begins to smoke, steak will have a burnt flavor.

  7. Step 2

Season steak and add to skillet. Allow to cook approximately 4-5 minutes on each side. Don't continuously turn steak, just turn once until done. A medium rare steak will have an internal temperature of about 130-135 degrees. Use a meat thermometer if you are unsure.

  8. Step 3

Remove steak from heat and allow to sit on a plate or cooling rack for several minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tastes great with steak sauce or BBQ sauce.
  • Thick steaks may require a cooking time of 7 minutes for medium rare.
  • Experiment with different herbs and spices for different flavors.
  • Always add steak to a hot skillet or broiler.
  • Failure to preheat stove will cause a longer cooking time, and an overdone steak.
